Spiky Sunday Selfie

Hi evfurry..we are happy to pawticipate again in The Cat on my heads bloggie hop of Sunday Selfies..of course WP does not do linkie poos so please hit the sidebar badge to see other Sunday Selfies around the world.

Today we have another guest selfie..to start the show..it’s our friend Eddy!

Eddy is an Echidna and he visits our property every summer..he comes to look for termites and ants..he is very thorough!

Eddy is a MONOTREME.. that means he…not he but Edwina his partner…is an egg laying mammal!

The only Monotremes in the world are Echidnas and Platypus! and only in Australia and New Guinea! so he is pretty darn special to us!

They are strong critters as anyone who has tried to pick one up while it is digging will tell you! Β and they make funny little growly grumbly sounds..their ‘nose’ is called a beak.

They partner for life and go their separate ways after their romance is over..MOL MOL…the ‘spikes’ on their backs are quills and made from Keratin the same as hair and nails..they fluff them up to protect themselves from predators, and they are sharp..just ask Mum who even with good gloves on has been jabbed a few times when trying to rescue them from the road.

It is often best to kind of shuffle them off the road as many injuries occur when they try to burrow into the bitumen..so best not to scare them if you can help it.

Mum has rescued a few from the roads..one had a broken scapula from a car hit..sadly he did not make it..but the other one Wes that she got did recover and was released not far from where he was found 6 weeks later..they are territorial so need release back to their home area if possible..

So a little bit about our special guy Eddy! and i have met him in the furs and he was very curious looking! Mum was with me and i was not at all trying to hurt him and she grabbed me up after i had a meet and greet and we let him go on his way πŸ™‚

Have a super Sunday evfurry…paw pats Dinnermintz xxx

  1. Mother Nature sure loves to throw a curveball every now and then….A mammal that lays eggs. Didn’t know Platypus layed eggs.

Hope you are having a lovely weekend. Sue, Polly & Honey
