Hi folks! my name is Oscar..us sheeps don’t get much blog time and it is time to speak up!
Me and my woolly brothers are 9 this year and as we are getting older we need a bit more care..we aren’t like dogs and cats..we live outside..all the time..and that’s fine by us!
This means though we need to be kept cool in Summer and Warm in winter..one way we cope is with our wool!
I am Merino amd my mum was big caramel coloured sheepie.beautiful ..and big!
Felix is part Merino an Corriedale..
See he has little horns..
Jock is a Suffolk sheepie…
Now we have Summer we need haircuts..and shearers are really hard to find!
You see it’s hard on their backs..and the older ones are either unable to do it anymore or won’t do it for small mobs..like us..
And the young peeps don’t want to do it..so mum and dad have had a hard time finding a shearer..
But they found one..and tomorrow we get a haircut..
Now we do NOT like this…we had a meeting and decided to make it as hard as possible for mum to round us up….Baaaaa
Now mum and dad do what they can to make it easier for us..they FAST us for 24 hours..we can have water but no feed and we get locked in the barn..you see we have 4 stomachs…and when we have feed and water in there and then we get bent over to be shorn it is very very painful..all he gases build up and some poor sheep can have heart attacks!
This is why you see sheep struggle when they are shorn!
When the shearer comes he will need power and he plugs in and then gets shearing..he has a back harness that usually is attached to his ute to keep his back protected and supported.
He will shear us then ‘backline’ us against bugs and lice and such and then urghhh ‘drench’ us.
This is a dog or cat version of worm paste!
You see we can get worms from the soil even though mum and dad rotate us in paddocks.
So tonight we will be rounded up into the barn..and its hot..which mum does not like but it is the only way to keep us from pain ..we need a certain amount of wool to keep us cool as it is an insulator and also keeps us warm in winter.
But too much wool (and we are very very heavily laden with wool) is not good..
Also flystrike can be a problem..certain flies can attack us and then we are in big big trouble..Felix had flystrike years ago..it happened very quickly and we nearly lost him..mum had to get the maggots out of him by hand until the vet could get there…gross..really gross..and to this day he has a small patch that will not grow wool near his butt on his back.
When sheep get sick they walk away from their herd..they actually give up and wait to die!
We also need to be able to get up..we cannot stay on the ground as we can die because of the way our stomachs work..
So there is some of the info on sheep and what we do..we can remember up to 100 people..and are shy of strangers..so we usually know the shearer and act up..so a new guy will be a challenge!
Mum plans on giving Miss Sharon from Gentle Stitches some of our wool! it is beautiful and fresh from the paddock to you!
Oh and another thing..we tend to get feisty with each other after a haircut..you see we kind of don’t recognise each other! I know silly but true..so we get all rowdy for a few days..makes mum laugh!
And also..with Australia day coming up the ads in TV are telling everyone to eat Lamb on the day…we say…
I mean who eats something as cute as us!
So wish us luck! Tomorrow we get our haircuts…
Fozziemum : always a stressful day when the boys get shorn, they are getting older and stress is not good for them so we always worry. We hope this shearer is good as some are like butchers and leave terrible cuts on them..we have been lucky so far with who we had but he is out of action with his back..We have a spray called Centrigen which is purple and sprayed on any nicks so the flies do not attack..Jock in particular is a concern as he has the continued problem with his legs and there is not much that can be done so we hope he copes ok with the shearing..sadly sheep can be problematic with so many things..they are our babies and we love them dearly so please spare a thought for our day tomorrow and hope it all goes well!
